Tickets for the 2012 Olympic Games don't go on sale until next year, but OIympic supporters are being encouraged to book their accommodation more quickly.

10,000,000 Tickets Are Expected To Be Made Available To The Public.
London2012.com states that tickets for the London Olympics/Paralympics will be made available in 2011. Even though it has not exactly defined when the tickets for each of the sports will be offered for sale to the public. You need to apply online for updates by email.
Overall, approximately eight million tickets will be available for the Olympic Games, with another 2 million for the Paralympic Games which follows. There is no final date to purchase tickets for the each of the events. Subject to availability, they'll remain on sale until the start of every competition. From past experience, you can be sure that for the top ranking events such as track/field days and the London Olympics closing ceremony, there will be huge demand and tickets will sell out lightening fast.
The same will be true for somewhere for your frends and family to stay. As has been noted above, for such a large city, London has relatively few hotel rooms. So you would be advised to also consider serviced apartments as an option.
