Coarse Fishing Tackle Report: The JW Young 13ft Trotter Rod

Coarse anglers like me are not the same as other fishers. Instead of seeking out premier fish species like salmon and trout, I prefer stalking a wide variety of fish, never knowing what might end up on my line. For that reason, my coarse fishing tackle has to be as adaptable as it possibly can. Bream, tench, chub, pike and many others all are fair game, provided I can outsmart them! To give myself the best chance of success, I choose both my fishing locales and tackle with great deliberation. You can’t necessarily use the same tackle for all species. When you are chasing the crafty pike, don’t try to use tackle deliberated for a smaller fish! Here’s some information about a rod I like quite a bit: the JW Young 13ft trotter rod.

Coarse Fishing Tackle: Main Aspects of the JW Young 13ft Trotter Rod

Of all the coarse fish species, I prefer to stalk the pike. Pike are smart, insistent predators which can give you a real battle when snared. This JW Young rod is an excellent all around float rod. I’ve found that it has very crisp and responsive tip action, a feature that’s important to me. Because it is 13ft long, it is just the thing for my needs, and I typically fit my rod with line that has a rating of 2 to 4lb test strength. This model from JW Young is manufactured with a small, three piece structure fashioned from a very slender, extremely high modulus blank. The rod is ringed for centrepin and fixed spool reels. One feature that I particularly appreciate is the sensitivity in the rod’s top section, which not only keeps hooks from pulling out, but also lends plenty of power and control to the lower sections.

Another feature I like quite a bit is that the blank is very thin. This makes the rod extremely comfortable hold during extended fishing sessions, a factor that figures prominently when I’m stick float fishing. This particular JW Young fishing rod is a superior piece of coarse fishing tackle, and is manufactured with a premium quality screw up reel fitting which will ensure that this reel remains tightly in its position. The reel fitting operates faultlessly, and I have never seen any slippage or problem in screwing up or down. Once it’s fixed to the rod, the reel is exceptionally secure.

JW Young rods are known for their superior quality, and this one is no exception. It is equipped with a hinged hook retainer which is strategically positioned right above its handles; this is greatly appreciated when you are moving around. Also, the retainer is hinged, making it easy to fold and get out of the way. This decreases the probability of the retainer being snagged by the reel line as you are casting, yet another great feature.

All things considered, this is a strongly designed, extremely serviceable piece of coarse fishing tackle that I’m happy to own, and pleased to recommend.
