Basketball Coaching: What You Need To Know

Though usually considered to be the most tedious and boring part of the game, basketball drills, are essential to a basketball team being all that they can be. As a coach this part of your responsibilities cannot be neglected, as it is what will introduce your players to the games and build within them the discipline and skill that they need. If you want them to be comfortable with the game and able to improve, then you must have drills.

One drill that is essential to the playing of the team is called a line sprint, which is a rather tedious one that will probably take a lot out of your players. In the line drill, players line up at one point, usually the base line, and sprint as fast as they can to another point, often either the free throw line or the base line. They should repeat this over and over, though not necessarily in order, but often so that their speed increases over time. With time you will see that your players are getting faster and more agile, and this will make a huge difference when they finally play a match. The ability to burst quickly into a run could save your team from potential losses in the future and make way for more points scored in a match.

One part of basketball playbook is understanding how to control the ball while dribbling, and full court dribbles will be required if you want your players to grasp the concept. Players will dribble down the court using their right hand, and on the return they will use their left. As they practice more they will get a better grasp on the dribbling concept. That being the case, this is an exercise that you will want to repeat constantly while you are coaching basketball. Like we said, drills can be repetitive, but in the end they certainly pay off.

Drills are essential to the success of the team, and putting in the work and hours needed will transfer directly into increasing your team's prowess on the court. You will win some and lose some, and you must be prepared for some defeats, but don't settle for defeat. Keep drilling and practicing and you will get better. Overconfidence on the part of your team should be avoided, and you should expect some losses, but you should also work for more wins. Now is the time for your coaching to take off and make a difference in the lives of your team players, so prepare for anything and everything the game might throw at you. Train and practice often, and you can certainly hope that the best will come to you.
